BALANGA CITY, Bataan – Abucay town placed first in the Nutrition Month Cooking contest organized by the Provincial Health Office (PHO) of Bataan.
The team brought home Php10,000 cash and a certificate with their squash cake with malunggay leaves.
“The contest aims to promote backyard gardening by showing that vegetables planted in backyards can be a cheap source of nutritious food,” PHO Head Rossana Buccahan said.
“Barangay nutrition scholars and barangay health workers joined the competition which required them to use squash or pumpkin as the main ingredient,” Buccahan added.
Kalabasa mamon from Mariveles town ended second receiving Php8,000 cash while the kalabasashroons from Orani landed third with Php6,000 cash.
Other dishes featured in the contest include sinarapang dahon ng kalabasa from Dinalupihan, carioca squash balls from Orion, pumpkin spaghetti squash and kalabasa ice cream from Pilar, kalabasa flan from Hermosa, and kalabasa pancake from Morong.
