BALANGA CITY, Bataan – Bataan governor Albert Raymond S. Garcia has asked the newly-elected municipal officials of Mariveles to set up an integrated working group that would focus on relocation program for informal dwellers.
The governor expressed his apprehension on the rising problem of informal settlers when the town officials led by Mayor-elect Lawyer Ace Jello “AJ” Concepcion made a courtesy call the other day to the provincial chief executive at his Bulwagan ng Bayan office inside the provincial capitol compound here.
Garcia gave emphasis on the functions of the working group to come up with adequate and favorable solutions with the rapid urbanization of the fast growing economic zone in the country, Authority of the Freeport Area of Bataan(AFAB), and the entry of San Miguel Corporation (SMC) to build a 500-hectare industrial estate and second coal fired power plant in the coastal village of Biaan.
He observed that the rapid urbanization and the inadequate capability to cope with the housing needs of the people coming to Mariveles town seeking employment and business opportunities have contributed to the growth of informal settlements.
Garcia said residing in these settlements poses significant health risks, sanitation, power and water facilities particularly for the minors.
He added the limited access to health and other basic services for the informal dwellers should be included as inputs in developing a comprehensive relocation plan for possible immediate implementation.
