SAMAL, Bataan – Asked by local media practitioners what has been her great legacy when she leaves local government service, outgoing Samal town Mayor Generosa Malibiran Dela Fuente or simply “Mayora Gene” to friends and almost everyone in Bataan, quickly said “pagbabago.”
Yes, changes in Samal or transformation of the municipality from being once tagged as the “lair of activists,” “laboratory of the New People’s Army” and other unsavory branding that implies opposition or rebellious to the government.
With the advent of new municipal mayors, more specifically, Mayor Gene Malibiran, Samal gradually transformed into an active town where trade and commerce started to become lively, investors came and tried the possibility of putting up business here.
Since then, the lady mayor introduced various programs that redound to inviting local folks to participate in the government’s social and economic program.
During the lively exchange of views with the outgoing mayor, we also asked what will become of Gene Malibiran after politics to which she quickly answered: “Farming. I might become a farmer, or a swine raiser.”
She was a bit emotional when she delivered her last speech before Samal folks during the Independence Day celebration which coincided with the oath-taking ceremonies for incoming Mayor Aida Macalinao and newly-elected Sangguniang Bayan members led by Erval Flores.
